How to Avoid Tooth Sensitivity
The ability to enjoy hot or cold beverages or food should not be compromised by irritating tooth aches. Dental up keep and hygiene is something that needs to be prioritized in order to not jeopardize the functionality of a healthy and painless smile. Luckily, there are a handful of ways to avoid the awful sensation of tooth sensitivity. The human tooth is made up of a fragile material called dentin which is typically being protected by the hard, outer layer of enamel. When the shield of the dentin is weakened, the microscopic nerve endings are exposed to anything that passes through the mouth such as foods and beverages. If a cold drink, for example, passes over the dentin, it will act as a trigger and stimulate a quick, sharp pain. Dentin hypersensitivity, the medical name used for this condition, is common dental issue that can have been caused by multiple reasons. Gum recession will expose dentin and put patients at risk of experiencing pain.
One way to avoid tooth sensitivity is by maintaining proper oral hygiene. Brushing twice a day in the morning and night will help by cleaning out plaque that can potentially wear away enamel. It’s important to remember that a toothbrush should never be too hard and should never be used too aggressively. Finding a toothbrush with soft bristles that also gets the job done is crucial for healthy brushing but brushing in a harsh or rough manner doesn’t in fact guarantee a deeper clean. It is actually that vicious brushing that can push back the gum line and in turn, expose the dentin that would become vulnerable to painful stimulants. This is why it is also recommended to floss at least once a day so that any plaque that’s hidden on the gum line or between teeth will not attack the enamel of the tooth. Since plaque contains harmful bacteria that contribute to tooth decay, it puts patients at risk of tooth sensitivity.
An effective method of preserving oral hygiene and avoiding preventable conditions such as tooth sensitivity is by scheduling regular check-ups with your dentist. Most people lead busy and hectic lives but nonetheless, visiting the dentist’s office will be the number one action when it comes to combatting potential conditions such as gum disease, bad breath, tooth decay, stained teeth, and much more. Although it can sometimes feel like a chore, it is an essential step of maintaining overall health.
